Once Upon A Time Season Premiere Review

Witches, A princess in distress, and creatures spinning gold no I wasn't reading my preschool books. I was watching ABC's premiere of Once Upon A Time, the show is based on the old fairy tales with a twist which catapults Snow White (played by Big Love's Ginnifer Goodwin), Rumpelstiltskin and an array of princes, dwarves and evil queens from 19th-century fairy tale land to a small Maine town called Storybrooke.

The Evil Queen’s curse that ends all happy endings, which entails of stripping all fairy tale characters of their identity and memories, and bringing them into our world where they remain ageless but stuck living completely shitty lives.  But before the curse is able to take effect, Snow White gives birth to a daughter named Emma, who is destined to break the curse once she reaches the age of 28.  Baby Emma is transported and raised in foster care and grows up into a jaded bail bondsman with a sick red leather jacket. A boy named Henry appears on Emma’s 28th birthday, revealing himself to be the son she had given up for adoption and that she needs go with him to his hometown of Storybrooke, Maine. Emma does so, only to return Henry to the woman who raised him, who happens to be the mayor of the small New England town, who also happens to be The Evil Queen herself.

I always find it funny that the Evil Queen in every Snow White film/series has amazing skin? Just a thought.

Back to the review, I liked how the show goes from the present real world to the fairy tale world of long ago {The show was developed by the creators of Lost, go figure}

Snow White's character pleasantly surprised me. The preview's made her seem like the typical "save me princess"

But when we see her next, she immediately points a sword at the evil Queen while trying to protect Prince Charming (as they are getting married!).

It's nice to see the writers not making Snow White a clueless princess waiting to be rescued. Her greatest quality and curse is that she is so giving but she is aware of the drama around her.

I heard Kristin Bauer (Pam from True Blood) will be playing Maleficent (The witch from Sleeping Beauty) in next week's episode. I wonder what she is going to look like?

I think Once Upon A Time has a lot potential. I just hope the creators of Lost don't drag it out.  Did anyone else see the show? What were your thoughts?

  2. I saw the show and, personally, was completely bored with it. The only highlights of the show were between Emma Swan and her son, Henry.

    I am a huge fan of LOST and of fairy tales, especially those with a dark twist but this show was nothing new. That's my main problem with it. Everything in the flashbacks felt like - been there, done that. There was no sense of danger. We all know the story of Snow White. Evil step-mother hates her step-daughter and cast her off to be killed but she escapes the huntsman to find safety with the Seven Dwarfs to learn the step-mother is a witch who poisons an apple and "kills" Snow to only have her come back to life with the kiss of a prince. This should have been done in a small montage in the beginning told by a Narrator, a la Pushing Daisies. This is a fairy tale, having it been told to us would have added charm because we were being told a story, Once Upon a Time lacked that and magic. I think if Henry would have narrated the story it would have added that element, and would have been cool to have a child tell an adult fairy tale to us. Again, Snow White's story didn't feel new. Ginnifer Goodwin is an amazing actress in Big Love but in Once she's taken a page from Winona Ryder's Book of Current Acting and lacked any type of, well, acting. I thought Snow White was the worst part of the episode.

    The show does have potential, but, the pilot was just average and predictable. A great dark twist to the fairy tales medium is Vertigo Comic's FABLES. Now, that's a show that I would have been excited to see. The Snow White in that version would blow you away - she's a strong and independent woman who is a role model for women, Ginnifer's version is far from that.

    Again, Emma Swan and Henry were the highlights of the episode, along with the Evil Witch, Rumpelstilskin, and the hotel staff which I think were Red Riding Hood and her Granny. I will stick around to see where the show goes but I do hope Once Upon a Time gets better because I love the concept - I just wish it was executed better.
